I have three children. We had a terrible time during the war, no food, no water. We were in Manukulam when a shell struck my husband. I was 22 when he died. We lived in a refugee camp in Chettikulum for about a year after that. When their father died I told my children that they should not worry because I will take care of them. I always do my best to provide them with what they need.

When my husband was alive we were quite content, we lived fairly well. We managed.
Now I make a living as a labourer. I work in a school. I also do some cooking there. I don’t have a regular salary. I am also able to bring some leftover food home for my children.

My daughter knows to sew. She is 21. She got a sewing machine from the church. So she makes a little money through her sewing. My son is 19 – he is a wage-labouror. He is learning to be a mason. The other son is 18 but because there is no money for him to study he wants to get a job.

Today I am concerned about my daughter’s dowry. This is a big worry for me. Things haven’t changed, people still ask for dowry. If I want a boy with a government job I need to pay a higher dowry, it’s like that. If his job is not that great I don’t have to pay so much. My daughter worries all the time about this.

I want the best for my children. They need to live well. The NGO Vivekenandan is helping us to build a house. We are doing it gradually. We are devotees of God Murugan. We seek solace from him. We pray to him so that our wishes will come true.

Things are getting better now. Change is slow but it is happening. We are able to go to places we were never able to before. I think it is important that all communities live in friendship in future.
