We were from the same village, the same class in school. We fell in love. He told me that he needed a job and would join the Army. At first I did not approve of it but he insisted, he said at least one of us should be working. So I relented. He joined the army on March 8, 1995.

It was when I was doing my A-levels that he got shot in Point Pedro. It was a terrible time for me. I had never been to Colombo but I went to the hospital to see him. He had lost one of his legs below his knee. But when I saw him I was relieved. I had expected much worse. He was afraid that I would forget about him. My family was concerned about how I’d manage with a disabled husband and were opposed so we decided to elope. My husband is the person I love. I would have married him even if he had lost all his limbs.

When my oldest child was 3 years old I went to work abroad to make ends meet. I experienced some problems there so I returned. I didn’t achieve anything by going. In this place, we live like brothers and sisters even though we live in closer proximity physically than we are used to.

My younger daughter wants to become a doctor and the older daughter wants to be a nurse. I have a few sewing machines. I don’t want to work under anyone. So I want to make this sewing business a success and be my own boss. I have a wonderful husband. We support each other.

Recently some families from the North visited us. I felt extremely sad when I heard what they had gone through. How they lived without electricity, with the sound of shelling…how did their children study? Even though my husband lost a limb I have no ill will or hatred towards Tamil people. It’s terrorism that I hate, not the Tamil people.

The war is over now. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for what the President, Mahinda Rajapakse has done. I saw the documentary on what our Forces went through in the war and what their families went through.
